Come Out and Play is intended to stay free for the people using it to get outside with friends.
No subscription required. No premium tier needed to find your people and go play.
Why free?
We didn’t build Come Out and Play because the world needed another social network. We built it because we wanted an easier way to find someone to ride with.
We ride, ski, and hike with a changing group of people. You meet folks you enjoy getting out with all the time — and then keeping track of everyone, and reaching out one by one every time you want to go, gets awkward. It can feel like you’re imposing.
What we actually wanted to say was simple: I’m riding. Who wants to come? Then let the right people see it, and let each of them decide. It works the other way too — friends post things you’d never have known were happening.
That only works if the people you’d actually go with are here. A subscription gets in the way of that. Someone who rides once a month should be just as welcome as someone who rides five days a week. Someone who only shows up in ski season shouldn’t have to pay to stay in touch the rest of the year.
We never stopped wanting to play. We just got harder to schedule. The goal is getting people out together — not charging each of them for the privilege.
Better than another group text
Direct invitations
Create pressure. Someone has to say no to you, and explain why.
Group texts
Create noise. You rode together once, and now you’re in the thread forever.
Public social media
Exposes too much. A ride with friends isn’t a broadcast.
Come Out and Play sits in the middle. Put the plan in front of the people you trust, and let each of them decide privately whether it works.
- No explanation required
- Nobody has to reply just to say no
- No permanent group chat
- No public activity feed
The point is to make getting outside easier, not to give you another place to scroll. It’s not your social network — it’s your active network.
So how does a free app pay its bills?
Honestly: software costs money to run. Hosting, the database, notifications, email, app-store fees, development, security, and support all add up — and they grow as more people use it.
Right now those costs are manageable. Eventually Come Out and Play should pay for itself, and the way we’d rather do that is modest local advertising, not charging the people using it.
Let the businesses that benefit from active local communities help support the tool those communities use.
Fewer ads. Better matched. More local.
If an ad shows up here, it should be one you might actually be glad to see: a bike shop near the trails you ride, a ski shop before the season starts, a running store, a guide, a repair shop, a shuttle, or the brewery where everyone ends up afterwards.
A local bike shop should be able to say, “We’d like local mountain bikers to know we’re here,” and Come Out and Play should be able to make that introduction without charging those mountain bikers to use the app.
We’re not trying to fill every screen or keep you in the app longer. A little relevant advertising helping to pay the bills — that’s the whole idea.
Relevant without giving up what’s private.
Ads would be matched to things like the kind of activity and the general region — not to who you are, who you’re with, or where you’re meeting. We don’t hand advertisers lists of people, names, connections, activities, meeting spots, phone numbers, or email addresses. And we do not sell personal information. The details are in our Privacy & Safety overview and the Privacy Policy.
For local businesses
Do you support people who get outside?
Come Out and Play is a community of people who actually ride, hike, ski, run, walk, paddle, and get outside. If your business serves those people, we’d like to hear from you.
Bike shops. Ski and snowboard shops. Running stores and outdoor retailers. Guides and instructors. Repair shops and shuttle services. Gyms, local races, and the restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops where everyone ends up afterwards — and any business or organization that serves active people nearby.
Reach the people most likely to care about what you do, while helping keep Come Out and Play free for the people getting outside.
Your business wins. Your community wins.

What we’ll keep putting first
Come Out and Play exists to make it easier to actually do things with people, not to keep you staring at an app. We use it the same way you do, and we intend to keep the tool we wanted in the first place simple, useful, and free.
- Help people get outside together.
- Keep participation free.
- Protect the private nature of the experience.
- Keep advertising modest and relevant.
- Let businesses that benefit from active communities help support them.
